Listen!

Listen!

BIBLICAL FOUNDATION

“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19 (NIV)

This verse is from the book of James and teaches that true wisdom starts with listening. It challenges us to pause before reacting, to value understanding more than being heard, and to recognize that listening is a form of love and respect.

WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES ABOUT LISTENING

Listening is more than hearing words — it’s an act of humility and compassion.  When communicating with another, James 1:19 stresses that we should listen by focusing on three key actions:

  1. Be quick to listen – Make listening your first response.
  2. Be slow to speak – Think before you talk.
  3. Be slow to become angry – Avoid reactive emotions by seeking understanding.

A LEADER CAN GAIN PRACTICAL BENEFITS BY LISTENING:

  1. People feel valued when they are heard, increasing trust and loyalty.
  2. Listening to diverse perspectives improves judgment and outcomes.
  3. Listening defuses tension and builds mutual respect.
  4. Teams thrive when leaders show genuine interest in their thoughts and needs.
  5. Listening allows leaders to learn and grow continuously.
  6. Good listeners uncover root causes of problems more effectively.

HINTS FOR BEING A BETTER LISTENER:

  1. Give your full attention to a speaker by putting away distractions and making eye contact.
  2. Asking clarifying questions helps ensure understanding.
  3. Don’t Interrupt.
  4. Listen with an open mind even if you disagree.
  5. Take time to consider what’s been said before reacting.
  6. Sometimes the best way to listen is simply to remain quiet and attentive.
