Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. — Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

TAKE ACTION

Building people up is helping them become more confident.  Use gentle, kind, and loving relationships as the foundation for helping others build confidence. Such help is important since people with higher levels of confidence are generally more successful in handling life problems than people with lower levels of confidence.

Unwholesome talk is foul or abusive language that tears people down rather than building them up. Insults and slurs commonly contained in unwholesome talk generally result in people questioning their ability or skill, defining themselves as selfish and immature, or seeing themselves as being too envious to be of service to others. Unwholesome talk never builds people up.  Stay away from it! 

By building others up, leaders can enable followers to become more confident and thereby greater contributors to organizational success. Knowing characteristics and personal circumstances of others is an immense help to leaders in determining best tactics for building up followers.

Hints for building others up:

Ephesians 4:29 (NIV) focuses on building people up.  The following are examples of tactics leaders can use to build people up:

  1. Be quick to forgive mistakes.
  2. Be respectful.
  3. Be understanding of the difficulty of meeting challenges.
  4. Be appreciative of contributions others make.

    In recent years, I have taken to heart more than ever, the words of Maya Angelou; “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

    It is typically a shallow, short-sighted, low self esteem that drives a person to attempt to put others down in an attempt to make him or herself look better in the eyes of others and feel better about him or herself.

    Ironically, they are doing just the opposite. In the eyes of others, their weakness is shown more vividly in the momentary spotlight.
